New: the Tarka guide to better biryani rice

COOKING TOOL

What can I cook with what I have?

Tick the ingredients in your kitchen and we will show which of our recipes you can make now, and exactly what is missing from the rest.

Salt, water, cooking oil and sugar are assumed. Garnishes and optional extras don’t count against a recipe.

Meat and eggs
Vegetables and fruit
Fresh herbs
Dairy
Rice, flour and grains
Lentils and pulses
Spices
Nuts and seeds
Sauces and extras

Start by ticking a main ingredient such as chicken, potatoes or chickpeas.

How the matching works

Every ingredient in every Tarka Tales recipe is mapped to a pantry item, so “Kashmiri chilli powder” counts as red chilli and “split lentils (masoor dal)” as masoor dal. Where a recipe offers a choice, such as ghee or oil, either one counts. Recipes are sorted by how few required ingredients you are missing, and anything more than 5 short is left out.

Spices alone never bring up a recipe; you need at least one main ingredient. Check the recipe itself before you shop: quantities, substitutions and serving suggestions are all on the recipe page, and our ingredient guides explain less-familiar items like anardana or ajwain.
