New: the Tarka guide to better biryani rice

PRACTICAL KITCHEN HELP

Cooking tools

Small calculators for the planning problems that come up most often when cooking Pakistani food for a crowd.

Cooking for a dawat, an Eid lunch or a family gathering usually starts with the same questions: how much rice, how much meat, and how to convert a recipe written in cups into grams. These tools answer those questions quickly. They give estimates rather than exact figures, because appetites, side dishes and the rice itself all vary, so round up when in doubt.

What can I cook?

Tick the ingredients you already have, from chicken and potatoes to besan and anardana, and see which of our recipes you can make now and exactly what is missing from the rest. Choices in a recipe, such as ghee or oil, count either way.

Rice calculator

Works out how much uncooked rice to cook for biryani, pulao, plain rice, fried rice or khichdi, depending on the number of people, appetite, whether rice is the main dish or a side, and the variety of rice.
